Jean Royère (1902-1981) was a self-taught French modernist. He studied the classics at Cambridge and then began a lucrative career as a banker. However, he left that behind at age 29 to enter the world of design.
He apprenticed with Pierre Gouffe, a furnituremaker in Paris and became Gouffe's artistic designer. He was influenced by Le Corbusier and Charlotte Perriand, but he was extremely original and innovative, so his designs were his own. He was known for his use of color and pattern, as well as for his work with metal, which included his unique lighting.
He opened his own gallery in 1944, with offices in Egypt, Lebanon, Peru and Iran. He counted kings among his clientele. Although he was an immensely popular designer, he had no wish for fame.
He moved to the United States in 1980 and died the next year.
